Yanga’s general election in motion.

Jerry Muro
YANGA has appointed Sam Mapande new electoral committee chairman tasked to prepare all election processes in the club.
His appointment came as a response to the order issued by the registrar of sports association and clubs wanting the Jangwani Street club to conduct the general meeting and elections in accordance with directives from the world soccer governing body, FIFA.
The Head of Information and Communication, Jerry Muro, confirmed the appointment in Dar es Salaam  saying the Club’s Chairman, Yusuf Manji, appointed Mapande, who is an advocate, to chair the club’s electoral committee and oversee the general election.
Advocate Mapande takes a vacant post left by Advocate Alex Mgongolwa who opted to step down claiming he wanted more time to concentrate with family matters.
Mgongolwa’s move was seen in one way or another to have delayed the club’s election despite the demand from club leadership insisting on an immediate start of the election process, naming the Election Day.
Before stepping down, Mgongolwa was required to call for the club’s general election after the term of the current leadership expired in June last year. Earlier, the club leadership, under Manji was supposed to leave office in June 2014 when their term officially expired, but the club’s elders committee and supporters extended the term to one year, a move seen as a violation of the club constitution.
As per government directives through the Sports Association and Clubs Registrar Office and the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF), Yanga have responded to the order by appointing Marande to head the Electoral committee, a situation soccer pundits claim has ended doubts that the club’s elections won’t take place.
According to Muro, after his appointment, Advocate Mapande’s first task will be to call members of the electoral committee and pick the committee vice-chairman before proceeding with other election procedures.
After raising of complaints about the delay of the General Election, the Club’s Chairman, Manji, came out to confirm a start of the election process saying he was the one pushing for the lection and wanted it be conducted a soon as possible.
Manji has also declared that he will seek re-election of chairmanship post in the forthcoming election and welcomed other members to challenge him if they feel to be clean enough for the post.
However, when Mapande was reached for the comment after his appointment, he said he was not in a position to confirm the appointment as he was not officially informed about it by the club Chairman. “I cannot say anything about the appointment because I am not aware of the appointment. I have not yet been informed about it,” he revealed.
Yanga current leadership is currently passing a rough road following a resignation of its Secretary General Dr Jonas Tiboroha, whom some sources claim to have been persuaded to resign by the top club leadership.
