ATHI WOMEN PROTEST RELEASE OF RAPE SUSPECT.
WOMEN from Athi River town yesterday held a
peaceful demonstration against the release of a man accused of raping a child.
Mavoko subcounty Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organisation chairperson Angeline
Maloza joined the protesters on the streets from Makadara shopping centre
towards Athi River police station, demanding the arrest of the suspect.
“We are protesting to demand justice. The man defiled a girl who comes
from a poor family and was arrested on Saturday,” Maloza said.
She said the man was detained at the cells for a few hours and released
at around 2am in the night.
The women said the suspect is a popular businessman. But officers took away their placards, saying the protest is illegal.
The girl’s mother said the man raped the 14-year-old girl on Thursday in
a Kitengela hotel.
