WAMBORA SETS UP POLICY FOR MACADAMIA PRODUCE.
Embu county does not fully benefit from macadamia despite
being the country’s largest producer of the nuts, Governor Martin Wambora has
said.
He said his administration has a policy to improve macadamia
profitability.
Wambora said macadamia is a very important crop with large
local and international demand.
He was speaking at Muthatari, Embu West subcounty last
Friday, when he laid a foundation stone for a macadamia processing factory,
Privamnuts Kenya Ltd.
It is being built by investor Patrick Mugo.
Wambora said macadamia contributes three per cent to the
county’s revenue.
The governor said the nuts earned the county Sh260 million
from 4,995 tonnes last year.
Almost 12 per cent of the county’s households depend on them,
he said.
Wambora said macadamia farming has been facing problems since
market liberalisation.
